What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is a non-invasive technology that produces extremely detailed images of organs, body tissue, and bones without radiation. Patients are exposed to radio waves in a strong magnetic field which generates electromagnetic energy. This energy is measured and analyzed by a computer producing both two and three dimensional images.

MRI has many applications. It is an invaluable diagnostic tool that can detect everything from cancer and strokes to heart and vascular disease. More importantly, with this technology physicians are able to avoid unnecessary surgery or other invasive diagnostic procedures.

How Should I Prepare?
  • Eat or Drink anything you normally would, including prescribed medications.
  • Wear clothes without metal zippers, hooks, etc. We will be happy to provide exam clothing if needed.
  • You will be asked to leave coins, keys, jewelry, hearing aids, hairpins, wallet, credit cards, watches and dentures in your patient locker or with a relative or friend.
  • Because a magnetic field is involved, you will be pre-screened for any of the following that may apply: pregnancy, metal implants, pacemaker, dentures, surgical staples, cochlear implants, artificial heart valves, aneurysm clips, etc.

How Long Does it Take?

Typically a study will last between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the body part that needs to be scanned. When having an MRI patients are required to lie on a sliding table and are positioned by the technologist to scan the correct body part. Patients must remain still during the procedure to ensure the best results. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes ahead of time to prepare for your exam.

Some studies require an injection of contrast to enhance the images of certain tissues and organs. The contrast is administered intravenously and is without any reaction or side effects.
